›› About MyeVyu

MyeVyu is a prototype set of applications in development by the MIND Lab of the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) in collaboration with the University's OIT, Department of Public Safety, Department of Transportation, and Department of Facilities.

MyeVyu aims not merely to make the University of Maryland campus substantially safer, but to improve the overall quality of everyday campus living.

One component of MyeVyu is designed to provide the user with location-aware, context- sensitive information and support. This means that the user will be able to contact a Police Dispatcher by simply pressing a button.

Unlike regular emergency calls, however, MyeVyu's Alert button automatically sends vital relevant, real-time information - user's ID and precise location, plus an audio and video stream that will allow the dispatcher to hear, view, and record what's taking place.

These added capabilities are engineered to make individuals feel more secure, make authorities more responsive in coming to the rescue, and help resolve and solve emergency situations and crimes committed - even acting to discourage crimes from being committed in the first place.

The MyeVyu system has been designed to provide users with access to a multitude of relevant information, customized to their needs and interests: current weather, campus events, location of vending machines, directions anywhere on campus, meeting times and locations, support for disabled access and paths to follow. MyeVyu can even provide help on the best Shuttle UM to use and the current locations, as well as the location of your vehicle parked on campus. We.re open to your ideas as to what other information and services would be useful to have included. Our hope is that the MyeVyu system will be incorporated into laptops, cell phones, and other handheld devices in the near future and will be available to the campus community at large.
